Overview
The Elms was built in 1710 and designed by Thomas White, a pupil of Sir Christopher Wren. White’s other work includes the Guildhall at Worcester, which contains many features similar to the house. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the carriage drive was once lined with elm trees, though these have long died out and been replaced with limes.
In 1840 the house became part of the nearby Abberley Hall Estate, owned by the wealthy Moilliet family. By 1854, it was occupied by the Reverend Pearson, Rector of Great Witley and relation of the Moilliets by marriage.
One of The Elms’ most notable owners was Sir Richard Brooke, a well-known racehorse breeder and founder of the Abberley Stud. Initially, Brooke took out a lease on the house, eventually buying it for £6,500 in 1927. To create a home befitting his status, Brooke significantly enlarged the building with two new wings. He also incorporated ‘new’ fireplaces and doorways, taken from his old family home of Norton Priory in Cheshire.
On the first night of occupation following the work, a devastating fire gutted the old central block of the house, leading to further development and restoration work. Brooke continued to live at The Elms until 1946, when the manor was sold and turned into a country house hotel. It became a part of the present-day Luxury Family Hotels group in 2011.
