Overview

Last December saw the opening of the second hotel of the House Collection, Paddocks House Hotel in Six Mile Bottom. This stunning hotel is part of  ‘The House collection’ . This new collection of hotels is not only taking Cambridgeshire by storm, but they are looking to expand elsewhere in the UK and overseas too.

Last year I was quite surprised by the news, that a boutique hotel would open its doors in Ely. Would there be demand for an exclusive hotel in Ely? I was clearly wrong as this is  actually what Ely needed. Poets House, has become a very popular venue for local businesses for dinners and lunches and it already is famed for their afternoon teas.

I haven’t had the chance to visit Poets House yet, but it’s in my diary for the second week of February when the Anne Franks exhibition starts at Ely Cathedral. It’s a good excuse to put Ely on the foodie map too. Ely is becoming a new foodie centre with the excellent chef Leah Jenson at Poets House,  Roly’s Fudge Shop , the micro pub Liberty Belle, the delightful Tea shop Samovar a few doors down and not to forget the idyllic Peacocks tearooms on the riverside. It’s also good excuse to find out how ‘the Boathouse’ is sailing too as this recently changed ownership.

Back to Six Mile Bottom or better known as the paddocks of the Newmarket race courses. Hence the House collections called their newest property ‘Paddocks House’. They like to refer to houses rather than hotels as the hotels derive from houses, giving their guests, the feeling that they are within a personal environment, yet with attainable luxury, assured service, in a homely, exclusive setting. The properties are of a grand stature in beautiful settings that provide the stage for an intimate, unique and memorable experience. This becomes very clear when you step through the door of the Paddocks house, it wraps around you. Although the colour scheme is stark and bold, slightly daring, there are just two words to describe this exclusive hotel – stunning and homely. It was for me almost a déja vu. The same feeling I have at the Red Carnation hotels, which originated in South Africa. The attention to detail, sumptuous, stylish, but giving you the feeling of ‘coming home’.

Although visitors to the racecourses is one their most important markets with people looking to buy race horses or watching their horses race, it’s a great addition for visitors to Cambridge and locals to party, dine and enjoy an afternoon tea too as it’s  just a stones throw away from Cambridge. At the back of the property you can find a stylish banqueting room with a private bar overlooking the gardens. I particularly like the restaurant. Although it seats 46, it’s actually very intimate. You can find little nooks and area’s where you can dine with a group of people or with the two of you for a romantic dinner, almost giving you the feeling being in a private dining room. Apart from their à la carte menu, they have a 2-course menu of £ 22.50 and a 3-course menu of £ 25.00.

I can’t wait to go here for dinner soon, especially after the tasters we had last night at the VIP launch party. They kept it simple offering 4 different canapés; fish and chips, tartare, roast beef and a small hamburger. I especially liked the roast beef and the fish and chips. The fish was served on a deep-fried slice of potato. I thought this was very clever and it was very tasty! Although it was hard to get away from the party, a tour of the bedrooms was a must. On their website it says ‘Luxury, peace, quiet and really comfy beds’. I couldn’t have described it better. The colour scheme in the bedrooms is just as stark and bold as in the public areas, which interestingly enough gives you that comfy feeling. Each of their 15 guest-rooms consists of a spacious suite, in which restful views of the surrounding grounds blend seamlessly with the latest technology, elegant free-standing copper baths and the last word in luxury beds. The copper baths take about fourty minutes to fill up, but you don’t have to worry keeping an eye on that. Your private butler will take care of this chore, whilst you sip your cocktail or a glass of bubbly downstairs.

Just in case you think, that this is all. There is more to come! Fancy trying your hand at making cocktails or joining the chef in the kitchen? The Paddocks house is the place to go. Over the next couple of months they have a lot of interesting food events planned so watch this space for updates.
